Apple Cobbler in Cast Iron Skillet

Summer is here and while everyone is making no bake desserts, I’m over here craving comfort food.

I can’t help it. I love apple desserts! Apple Hand Pies, Apple Crisp, Apple Banana Carrot Bread…you get the drift.

But, since it’s summer, I like to find a few shortcuts along the way, so that I can spend more time outdoors.

One Dish- This dessert is made in the skillet so you can transfer it right from stove to oven in one dish.

Ingredients You’ll Need

Ingredients needed to make apple cobbler in a skillet.
  • Apples – Tart varieties like Granny Smiths taste best, but feel free to mix it up with your favorite variety.
  • Refrigerated Biscuits – Grab a package of refrigerated uncooked biscuits–the big fluffy kind! The convenience of just being able to throw the wrapper in the trash and not have to clean counters after rolling out biscuit dough makes it the easy choice for me. However, if you prefer biscuits from scratch, you can totally do what works for you.
  • Walnuts – Chopped walnuts or walnut pieces add a delightful crunch to the apple cobbler. If you or someone you’re cooking for can’t have nuts, feel free to leave them out. Use our tips on how to toast nuts for best flavor.

How to Make Apple Cobbler in a Skillet

Step by step photos showing how to make apple cobbler in the skillet.

My biscuit cobbler made in a skillet is so good and easy. You literally just make a quick batch of fried apples, top it with biscuits, and bake!

PRO TIP: Use a well seasoned cast iron skillet!

  1. Cook the apples. Simmer for about 6-8 minutes.
  2. Top with biscuits. Open the package of biscuits and place the raw biscuits evenly over the apples. Bake for 25 minutes.

Add a Glaze.

Meanwhile, whisk powdered sugar and milk together to form an easy icing. When the cobbler is done baking, remove from the oven and immediately drizzle the glaze over the pan.

Add this vanilla ice cream on top of each serving! Cold ice cream melting over hot apple cobbler is a taste experience like nothing else.

Instructions

  • Over medium high heat, add butter to a 10-inch cast iron skillet. When melted, toss in sliced and peeled apples, cinnamon, nutmeg, brown sugar, and walnuts. Simmer for about 6-8 minutes over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
  • Top apples with biscuits, spacing the 8 biscuits evenly over the mixture. Bake in a 350°F oven for 25 minutes.
  • While cobbler is baking, whisk together powdered sugar and milk into a thin glaze. Remove apple cobbler from oven and immediately drizzle glaze over biscuits. Serve hot with ice cream. ENJOY!

Notes

  • Use a clean, well seasoned cast iron skillet.
  • You’ll need about 4 mediuam size apples for today’s cobbler.
  • Add this vanilla ice cream on top of each serving! Cold ice cream melting over hot apple cobbler is a taste experience like nothing else.
  • I don’t recommend storing this or making it in advance. The biscuits will get stale and lose their irresistible fluffiness.

  1. I could totally eat a full skillet of this! I love pre-cut apples for snacking, but they do make dessert-baking SO much easier, too!
