Ingredient Notes

Ingredients needed for irish cream coffee creamer.
  • Espresso powder – This does not give the creamer itself a strong coffee taste, but does add an acidity that mimics the liqueur in traditional Bailey’s creamers. I use this one from amazon.
  • Cocoa powder – Like the espresso, the cocoa does not give the creamer a strong chocolate flavor. It does make it taste beautifully rich and gives it a light brown appearance.
  • Vanilla extract- use our homemade vanilla extract recipe, or a pure vanilla from the store!
  • Almond extract- combined with the vanilla it creates a rich, nutty flavor.

Tips and Tricks

  • Use fat free condensed milk and skim milk in the recipe instead of full fat versions for fat free coffee creamer.
  • On the flip side, swap the milk for heavy cream (or half and half) for an ultra creamy version!
  • Use the expiration date on your milk to determine the lifespan of your coffee creamer. The fresher the milk, the longer your homemade creamer will last in the fridge.
  • Shake the jar of creamer before adding it to your coffee. It’s natural for ingredients to separate as they chill. A good shake takes care of that! (Plus it’s fun.)

Is espresso powder the same as ground coffee beans?

No, it’s not just ground coffee beans. Espresso Powder is intensely concentrated coffee that’s dried into a rich, heavily roasted powder. It’s used to enhance the flavor of chocolate or add a hint of coffee to baked goods. (Or, in this case, coffee creamer!)

Can I use this creamer in iced coffee?

You definitely can! I love Irish Cream Creamer in both hot AND iced coffee drinks!

How much creamer does this recipe make?

This recipe yields about 2 cups of creamer. That’s enough for a house full of coffee drinkers to be set for a while, depending on how much cream you like in your coffee, of course.

Ingredients 

  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk 14 ounce
  • 1 ½ cup milk
  • 2 Tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoon espresso powder
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions 

  • In a small saucepan, whisk together 1 cup of the milk with cocoa powder and espresso powder over low heat. Whisk until smooth and no granules remain. Remove from heat.
  • Combine mixture with remaining milk, condensed milk and extracts in a large mason jar.
  • Shake vigorously until combined. Store in refrigerator, shake before each use.

Notes

  • You can substitute fat free condensed milk and use fat free (skim) milk to make this a Fat Free coffee creamer.
  • I use the "sell by" date on my milk as my expiration date for this creamer.
  • Substitute heavy cream for the milk to create an ultra creamy version. Use within 7 days.
  • I use this espresso powder from amazon.

  1. This sounds so good, Aimee! Definitely planning to try it. I love Irish Cream flavor in coffees when I get coffee out – homemade will be so luxurious! Just curious, why the addition of espresso powder, since we’ll be adding the creamer to a cup of coffee already? I mean, the more coffee flavor the better I suppose! 😀

    1. Some people love using this creamer (myself included) in a cup of cocoa! Plus, yeah, more coffee the better 🙂

  2. I just found out today that Bailey’s Irish Creme has been discontinued. I am unable to drink the alcoholic version, but I do like the taste of the coffee creamer. It was a shame they quit distributing the creamer. Closest to the real thing. However, I happened to see your recipe online. Going to buy the ingredients on my next shopping trip. I’ve never used Expresso powder and wouldn’t even know where to look for it. But I’ll try to find in Publix.

    1. International delight has also not renewed their license with Coldstone Creamery so no more Sweet Cream. Instead International Delight has started making it’s own version and they call it sweet and creamy. it is no comparison to Coldstone’s sweet cream. Matter of fact, it is terrible, don’t waste your money. I am happy I found this post. My next step was to purchase the Irish Creme and now I know it is also discontinued. I will definitely try to make my own.

  3. I can’t wait to try this. We’ve been using International Delight brand Irish Cream and it’s not longer available. Since it is loaded with artificial ingredients anyway, this gives us an opportunity to adjust our tastes to something ummm…. healthier? 🙂

It has not been discontinued, but not available in my area any longer…even when requested 🙁 My elderly neighbor is heartbroken. I would like to make it for him, if possible. Never had it myself.
