Why this Recipe is Best

Fall desserts are the ultimate comfort food in my opinion.

The warmth of cinnamon and apples or pumpkin desserts, while wrapped in a cozy blanket by a fireplace are what movies are made of.

In an attempt to bring that delicious comfort food to your table quickly, this easy Instant Pot Apple Crisp recipe will be in your mouth in minutes!

Seriously.

Apple Crisps and Apple Crumble recipes are quite similar. Some people will argue about the differences, but in my mind it doesn’t matter. Whatever you call them, they are delicious!

Ingredient Notes

Ingredients needed to make Instant Pot apple crisp.
  • Apples. Of course choosing the right apple for your taste buds is the first step. You may also wonder, should I peel the apples? In this case, I say yes.
  • Oats. Use old fashioned oats in today’s Old Fashioned Apple Crisp recipe! Quick oats will get too soggy, and steel cut won’t cook completely.
  • Brown Sugar. A must. As it cooks it caramelizes and cooks into a thick sauce.
  • Almond Extract. The secret to a flavorful crisp!
  • TOPPINGS. Whether you choose to top your apple crisp with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream is totally your call. But don’t skip the caramel sauce! Worth every extra calorie.

Tips and Tricks

  • In the instant pot, apples cook very quickly. To prevent making Instant Pot applesauce, chop your apples into large chunks or slices. If you want your apples firmer, cook for only 1 minute, for much softer apples cook up to 5 minutes.
  • Want the crispy oat topping that doesn’t happen in an Instant pot? Spoon Apple Crisp into oven safe bowls and broil for 2-3 minutes.
  • Leftovers are delicious. Warm in microwave for one minutes and enjoy!
  • I prepared today’s recipe in a 6qt Instant Pot. Prep time does not include the time it takes the Instant Pot to come to pressure.

Recipe FAQs

Can Apple Crisp be made in the oven?

Absolutely. Assemble apple crisp the same way as the instant pot except SKIP the water! Prepare in a 9-inch square baking dish and bake in 375 degree oven for 30-35 minutes (uncovered).

How do I make the apple crisp toasted?

Spoon apple crsip into an oven safe baking dish. Broil on high for 2-3 minutes, until top is browned and bubbly.

Choose one with flavors you like. A combination of granny smith and gala apples is my favorite.

Variations of Apple Crisp

  • Gluten Free Apple Crisp can be made by choosing gluten free flour and gluten free oats.
  • Add chopped pecans to the struesel topping for a nutty flavor.
  • Swap out apples for zucchini! Yes, it will taste amazing and chances are nobody will even know you used zucchini. Our zucchini crumble is fantastic!

  1. Aimee I attempted this and as soon as it came to pressure and the cooking actually started I immediately got a burn warning… I followed the instructions just as you had said. Hoping you could tell me why?

    1. Often times when getting the burn notice there is something stuck to the inside of the pot. If you’re browning meat, it could be bits of that (that didn’t get completely cleaned). Sometimes a piece of apple will stick and cause the notice. Open the pot, give a little stir and scrap the bottom, then secure the lid and bring it back to pressure and resume cooking time.

    2. I sprayed the inside of the Instant Pot insert with cooking spray and that seemed to stop it from giving the burn message

  2. My pot retired “burn” , but after I quick released and opened it it was actually cooked perfectly. Delicious and will make again

  3. Wow, this was delicious! I especially appreciate that there were more apples than oats – other recipes don’t have the apples as the main element. And that sauce! I followed the recipe exactly in my 3 quart IP and didn’t have any problems. My hubby and I almost finished the entire potful as soon as it was done. This recipe goes in my top 10.

  4. This is an awesome quick and easy recipe …not too sweet … followed the recipe exactly as outlined … don’t cut your apple slices too small … perfect warm apple dessert… loved it!!!

  5. Hmm. Not sure why, but 3 mins in Instant Pot turned apples to mush. I cut large chunks. I would also wait and put crumbles on after it was cooked and use my crisp lid to brown up. Thank you for lovely recipe..I would use less water as well. My Granny Smith apples may have been so fresh that they had more moisture ?

  6. I love cooking with an electric pressure cooker! I use one 3-5 times a week. This is a great recipe for a busy fall night.

  7. Have you had any problems with your Insta Pot? I was looking at them on Amazon and there were several bad reviews. Can you give me your opinion?
    Thank you,
    deb

    1. Hi Deb,
I have a Breville Fast Slow Pro Cooker and I love it , easy to use and eliminates my slow cooker and pressure cooker giving me more space in the kitchen.
      Hope this helps,
      Carol
