Homemade Butterscotch Sauce is a quick and easy treat made in less than ten minutes. It’s a silky smooth sauce with flavors of brown sugar and butter, and is delicious on ice cream, pie, and so much more.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • pinch kosher salt (about ⅛ teaspoon)

Instructions

  1. Add brown sugar, butter, and heavy whipping cream to a heavy-bottomed saucepan.
  2. Whisk until smooth over low heat. STOP STIRRING and bring to a gentle boil.
  3. Cook for 3-4 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat. With a clean whisk, stir in vanilla extract and salt.
  5. Let cool at room temperature until refrigerating.

Notes

  • Storage: Pour butterscotch sauce into an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for no more than 2 weeks. The sauce will thicken upon refrigeration. It can be reheated in the microwave at 10-second intervals, stirring in between, or on the stove top over low heat.
  • Using a heavy-bottomed saucepan is recommended.
  • Recipe makes about 1 ½ cups of butterscotch sauce.
