Living in Chicago we are blessed with some of the best pizza on earth. I don’t want to hear from you New Yorkers about your folded over cardboard, haha, you’re not going to convince me or turn me to the dark side!
However, we have our own internal squabbles here in Chicago…which pizza place is better? And there are so many many places. I grew up eating Aurelio’s Pizza….and if we had one near where I live that’s what I would eat every Friday night!
Typically if my family craves deep dish pizza, we order from Giordano’s Pizza. It’s within walking distance to our house. But last week we got a Lou Malnati’s in our neighborhood. If you’re not from Chicago….and you just want the soup recipe, scroll on down. But, if you care about my pizza ramblings, keep reading!
So, we did what any hard core pizza lovers would do. We put them up for a taste test! One deep dish against the other. Here’s the results:
While I love the thick crust of Giordano’s deep dish, the buttery crust of Lou’s is irresistible. Lou’s won the crust category!
The thick layer of cheese on Giordano’s was hands down more flavorful and plentiful than Lou’s. They won for me, however my husband preferred Lou’s lighter cheese layer.
Finally, the sauce. I think Giordano’s uses more seasonings, while Lou’s tasted more like tomato paste. Giordano’s was the clear winner for sauce.
So…to sum up, this is my blog and my husbands vote doesn’t count….Giordano’s won the deep dish category!!
What does this have to do with today’s soup recipe? Absolutely nothing. Except if you’re not from Chicago and you want something that tastes delicious but isn’t going to try to pass itself off as authentic pizza, give this soup a try! Or, take a stab at making my homemade Deep Dish Pizza recipe! We agreed in our house that we prefer the homemade to both Lou’s and Giordano’s. Except for the fact that we have to make it ourselves.
I love soup this time of year. Especially when it can be made in the crockpot! That’s a double win in my book!
Today’s recipe is like a “SUPREME” pizza soup. But feel free to add/remove ingredients for your family’s tastes! I whipped up a side of Pillsbury breadsticks to enjoy and dunk in our soup. Perfect.
