About Me

Welcome! My name is Aimee and I’ve been a professional food blogger for over 13 years. I’ve created thousands of classic recipes, from savory to sweet, and have been sharing them with my millions of readers each month!

Grab a cup of coffee (or beverage of your choice) and stay with me awhile. The one thing I’m asked often is if “SHUGARY” is spelled correctly. Yes. It is. It’s a take on my last name.

A Little Bit About Me

My ancestors are from mainly Germany and Sweden, but I have a little Polish and Czech in me too. While my recipes are generally American, you will find a few authentic recipes, like my swedish meatballs, german lebkuchen cookies, and my polish kolachky recipe.

I grew up in the Chicago suburbs, and except for an 8 year hiatus to Ohio, I’ve lived in the Chicago suburbs my whole life. Until now.

We recently relocated to North Carolina to build our dream house on Lake Norman.

I married my best friend, Michael, in 1995 and we have 4 amazing children together. I’ve learned through the years how to be a mom, how to be a better mom, and how to accept not being the best mom. As of 2022 we are also now “grandma and grandpa” to an adorable little girl!

I am self-taught foodie. Years of helping my mom in the kitchen serve dinner to my dad and brothers has served me well. I grew up knowing how to make meatloaf, tuna casserole, and stuffed peppers!

I learned the joy of having the family around the dinner table each night. As times have changed, I still try to get my own family around that dinner table each night (and yes, I still serve those classic comfort foods to my own children)!

I believe in the art of balance. Everything in moderation. If you’re going to enjoy dessert, make sure it’s worth it. Skip the treats that don’t “wow” you, and enjoy seconds of the ones that do!

To balance my love of dessert, you’ll also see me going on daily walks in the sunshine, as well as doing CrossFit (I LOVE lifting heavy weights).

What You’ll Find on Shugary Sweets

My favorite dessert is Rice Krispie treats. I’m sorry. I can’t help it. I know on my blog there are some incredible cheesecakes, cakes and brownies…but it’s the classic krispie treat that I have zero will power over! My obsession for these treats is apparent when you see that I have over 15 varieties on the blog!

I’m also a huge coffee lover and have a thing for collecting mugs. I don’t own any matching sets, just a hodge podge of random mugs that strike my fancy!

Be sure to follow me on Instagram….it’s where I share all the “behind the scenes” of my life! From what’s cooking in the kitchen, to what late night snack I’m eating. Exciting stuff!

How it All Began

I began writing here back in 2007, and it was all family stuff. Occasionally you may see one of those awkward stories pop up in the related links at the bottom of a post. In 2011, I re-branded and officially began “FOOD BLOGGING” under the name Shugary Sweets.

Through the years, you’ll find that my recipes have been tested and researched.

  • Classic and Approachable. I try to bring back those good things my grandma made when we were children. You’ll see boxed mixes, Cool Whip as well as from scratch cakes and brownies!
  • Family Favorites. I try to appeal to everyone, but mostly my own family. What you see on the blog, is what we eat! If you’re new to cooking and baking, don’t be afraid. My recipes are easy enough for even you!
  • Featured on Websites and In Print Publications. Shugary Sweets has been featured in dozens of magazines and online websites, including Better Homes and Gardens, Woman’s World, Parade, Redbook, Buzzfeed, Fox News, Huffington Post, Rachael Ray, The Today Show, and many more! Mediavine has even interviewed Shugary Sweets as one of their top publishers.
  • Brand Partner. In addition to pairing with brands we love, such as Crunch Pak, Rodelle Vanilla, and Drink Milk, Shugary Sweets has also been a judge at a fun chocolate fest in her hometown!

All Your Questions Answered

Do you sell your food?

One of the biggest questions I get is “can I buy your food, instead of make it.” And the answer, sadly, is no. I don’t sell my food. Instead, I empower you to make it yourself with easy, straightforward recipes.

Do you have a cookbook?

Yes! After many years of turning down offers, I created my own self-published cookbook, called Baking Basics. You can order the cookbook in print, or digital download! I also have several smaller ebooks for sale too.

Do you have a hidden gem of a recipe, that you love but never gets enough attention?

I’ve got a number to treats on this site that are simply out of this world, but just don’t seem to go crazy on social media. This butter pecan skillet cake is in my top five favorite desserts! Or give our delicious blueberry pie recipe a try.

Can I make ingredient substitutions in your recipes?

I get it. Sometimes you don’t have certain ingredients on hand, or maybe there is an allergy in your life. I try to include options in each recipe, when possible, and if tested. I also have a baking basics category, for you to try our buttermilk substitute and so much more!

Please stay awhile, poke through my recipes, and reach out to me if you have any questions!
