Why Make Waffles at home

Waffles are the superheroes of weekend breakfast! There’s nothing like sleeping in on a Saturday morning, then stumbling out of bed to sit down to a plate of freshly made waffles drizzled with real maple syrup.

While sometimes I might crave french toast or pumpkin scones, it’s waffles that make everyone happy!

Never made homemade waffles before? I’m here to help!

  • This recipe creates perfect waffles with buttery crisp edges that yield to a fluffy interior.
  • Homemade Waffles sweep the floor with the frozen toaster waffles—and you can even freeze leftovers!
  • Making waffles from scratch is hardly any more difficult than using a waffle mix. Boxed waffle mix can definitely be convenient but really just saves you the step of mixing the dry ingredients together.

Be sure to try our chocolate chip waffles next! They’re homemade and delicious!

Ingredients for Waffle Mix

Here’s what you need to make these waffles.

PRO TIP: You can keep the dry ingredients in an airtight container so it’s available anytime you want waffles!

For the dry waffle mix:

Combine these ingredients in a bowl, then proceed with the recipe. If you like, you can make this in advance to store. Then the next time you want waffles, pull it out and use it just like you would use a storebought waffle mix!

Wet ingredients to add to the waffle mix:

Metal scoop pouring batter onto a waffle iron.

How to Make Waffles

Easy as 1, 2, 3!

  1. Make the batter. Mix together the wet ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Pour it into the dry mix and whisk to combine. Let sit for a few minutes while you preheat your waffle iron.
  2. Prepare your waffle iron. Preheat your waffle iron. Spray waffle iron with baking spray before the FIRST batch only.
  3. Cook! Ladle batter into preheated waffle iron and cook until golden brown. Carefully remove the waffle and repeat with remaining batter. Keep waffles warm until ready to serve!

Aimee’s best tip

Make sure your waffle iron is hot enough before adding the batter. An iron that’s too cool won’t cook the inside of the waffle thoroughly making it more likely for the waffle to split and stick to the pan.

Waffle Toppings

Waffle squares were built for catching pools of maple syrup and butter.

  • Fresh fruit and whipped cream are also heavenly on these waffles!
  • If you haven’t tried my homemade buttermilk syrup yet, DO IT. Only 5 ingredients and 5 minutes, you’ll love the rich flavor!
  • Oh and I can’t forget to mention, dessert waffles. A scoop of cold vanilla ice cream on top of a warm waffle just about makes me weak in the knees. (My kids have no complaints about them, either.) Add a drizzle of our homemade chocolate syrup or strawberry syrup to complete the treat.

Storage Tips

Make a big batch of homemade waffles on the weekend and store any extras in the freezer. Then you’ll have convenient toaster waffles for weekday breakfasts, but with all the good taste of homemade!

To freeze waffles.

  1. Let all the waffles cool completely.
  2. Transfer to freezer bags with a sheet of wax paper between layers of waffle to prevent sticking. Store in the freezer until ready to use.

To reheat frozen waffles:

  • Place individual waffle in a toaster or toaster oven and heat until cooked through.
  • You can also reheat frozen waffles in an oven at 350 F. Cover the waffles loosely with foil to keep from drying out as they heat.

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. This can also be stored and made ahead for later.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
  • Pour the milk mixture into the flour mixture and whisk until combined. Let sit for several minutes while iron heats up.

Notes

  • Along with a good waffle recipe, you need a good waffle iron! I love my Dash Waffle Iron. It’s inexpensive, easy to use and clean and always makes golden brown waffles.
  • In my Dash waffle iron, the waffles take about 3 minutes to cookthrough. Yours might take a bit less time or a bit more. If you’re new to waffle making, this make take some trial and error until you really get to know your waffle iron!
  • Keep waffles warm until ready to serve by setting them on a baking pan in the oven on the “warm” setting.
  • Looking for low carb or gluten free? Use the Dash waffle maker to make Chaffles. Cheesy buns with no carbs!

      1. When making these they were really thick.
So I added water to make less thick.
Then they were really flat .
So I added 1/4″ Teasp of baking powder.

This was a delicious and simple waffle recipe. I used almond milk instead of regular milk, and substituted coconut oil for butter, same quantity. Came out so good! I would probably add a tad bit less salt next time for my taste, but still great!!

  2. 5 stars
Oh my goodness! Where do I start!? These are just the absolute best waffles I’ve ever had! I had actually never made waffles before, but this recipe was simple enough that it was super easy! Also, a little tip if your like me and didn’t have unsalted butter, I just used the salted butter and added less salt and it worked out perfectly. Overall, I would definitely recommend this waffle recipe and will be making it for breakfast quite a lot!

These are soooo good!! I use Gluten free flour and almond milk and they turn out delicious and crunchy every time!!! 10 out of 10!!

  4. 4 stars
I did this recipe with a larger waffle iron and it turned out great, it was just a little on the smaller side for the amount of batter but that’s because of the size of the waffle iron I used. It was also just a bit too thick so I added a little milk and it worked perfectly. Definitely going to be making again!!!!

Hi as very inexperienced in the kitchen I found this recipe very easy to follow and it also tasted delicious, although I do have to say that the website it’s self felt too cluttered with unnecessary information.

  6. My new go-to recipe, thanks! I add a scoop of non flavored protein powder for an additional boost and keep a stack in the freezer, the kids love them!

  7. The batter was too thick, and had a slight aftertaste of baking powder. The amount of baking powder also meant that while they were quite fluffy, they didn’t crisp as much as they should have. I’ll be upping the milk next time also.

  8. Excellent recipe. First time I used my dash waffle iron and they all came out perfectly from the first to the last. I used 3 TB batter for each one. Perfect crisp outside amazing height and fluff. I did not taste baking soda and neither did my son or daughter in law. . The only thing I changed was the butter amount to 4 tablespoons so that I could also have it on top and not have such a massive amount, that was purely personal preference. Will make again and again and I froze them for the grandkids! Thank you Aimee

  9. My batter was too thick so I just added a little more milk. It did the trick. I also like more vanilla so I did a full tablespoon. Overall it’s a good recipe. Thank you for sharing it!

I tried this recipe, substituting a banana for the egg and adding unsalted walnuts for flavor. I found the end result to be a tad salty, but it added to the flavor profile in my opinion, rather than ruining the dish.

I made half of this recipe and I used half and half instead of milk, but the batter was so thick that I had to add more milk. I put chopped pecans in my waffle iron and then made the waffles. They turned out great, but I do make waffles so much that I knew that the batter was not the consistency I needed for my waffle iron.

  12. Love your recipe; glad I found an easy and wonderful recipe that’s simple to make and is tasty. My family loves it! Thank you!💕

The waffles were pretty good, the only thing i noticed was a lot of butter, i used even less than the 2/3 cup suggestion (cause i ran out) and they still came out tasting just like butter and a little greasy. But not bad at all, still were yummy, i’d probably just cut back a little more next time

  14. Awesome…. Hubby and I enjoyed your waffles. Not at all hard, waffle maker loved it also. Can’t wait till my grandson tastes these… Thanks again…YUM

  15. A useless recipe. You tell what ingredients to use but not how much of each to use. But you sure seem to like to have a lot of advertisements on your useless “recipe” page.

    1. What a useless comment. Sorry, but instead of complaining, there is a complete recipe card right above this comment.

        1. The milk ought not to be cold or that melted butter will solidify. I have a hungry man looking at me and am not sure what to do lol.

  16. Absolutely amazing! Thank you! I made heart shaped ones and I wish I could post the pic of how beautiful they came out!

  17. My son is going to love this recipe! Waffles are a favorite here! These will definitely be a big hit!
