What is a Fluffernutter

A fluffernutter is a sandwich made with marshmallow fluff and peanut butter. But it’s so much more than a sandwich! It’s an EXPERIENCE.

As a kid, fluffernutter’s were the quick and easy snack or lunchbox treasure. Big bites of peanut butter, fluff and wonder bread were washed down with an ice cold glass of milk after school.

I might not be a kid any more but I still love peanut butter and marshmallow fluff. They’re the perfect addition to another lifelong favorite of mine: Rice Krispie Treats!

Fluffernutter Rice Krispie Treats are soft, chewy no-bake peanut butter krispie treats with ribbons of gooey marshmallow and topped with mini peanut butter cups. Perfect rice krispies recipe for peanut butter lovers!

Ingredient Notes

Ingredients needed to make peanut butter krispie treats.
  • Marshmallows – You will need both mini marshmallows AND regular size marshmallows to make these treats.
  • Peanut butter – We used creamy peanut butter, but crunchy peanut butter will work too if you like the texture.
  • Peanut butter morsels – There are melted and spread over the tops of the rice krispie treats.
  • Mini Reese’s peanut butter cups – We pressed them on top of the bars at the end because chocolate makes everything better!

You’ll also need puffed rice cereal (Rice Krispies) and unsalted butter for this Fluffernutter Rice Krispie Treats recipe.

Tips and Tricks

Step by step photos showing how to make peanut butter krispie treats.
  • Line your baking dish! Rice Krispie Treats are STICKY! Place a square of parchment paper on the bottom of your baking dish to prevent sticking. The parchment makes it easier to lift the finished treats from the pan, too!
  • Use the butter wrapper or the plastic marshmallow bag to press the rice cereal mixture into the pan to keep your fingers from getting sticky.
  • Press LIGHTLY. When you add the treat mixture to the pan, use as gentle of a touch as possible. The harder you press, the harder and denser your finished Fluffernutter Rice Krispie Treats will be.
  • Store these bars in an airtight container at room temperature. Enjoy within 5 days for best taste–but I bet you’ll eat them up long before then!

Recipe FAQs

How do you melt the peanut butter chips?

I melt the peanut butter chips in the microwave. Use a glass, microwave-safe bowl. Heat in 30 second increments, stirring between each one until the morsels are smooth and melted.

How can I make the melted peanut butter morsels easier to spread?

If the melted morsels are too thick, whisk in a little vegetable oil. Add 1 teaspoon at a time until you reach the desired consistency.

I only have full size marshmallows. Can I still make this recipe?

Yes, you can. Chop your full size marshmallows into small pieces, then fold them into the treat mixture as directed in place of the miniature marshmallows.

Can I freeze rice krispie treats?

I don’t recommend freezing rice krispie treats, personally. I know others do, but I find the texture of the treats changes when they thaw. You’ll enjoy these fluffernutter krispie treats so much better FRESH!

Instructions

  • In a large pot, melt butter over medium heat. Add marshmallows and turn heat to low. Stir until completely smooth. Remove from heat and quickly stir in peanut butter. Add cereal.
  • Fold in the mini marshmallows. Pour Krispies treats into a 9inch square baking dish lined with parchment paper (or buttered foil). DO NOT PRESS them in tightly. Just very gently even the top of the treats (I use the butter wrapper or marshmallow bag wrapper to press it in). Spread melted peanut butter morsels over the top.
  • Top the melted peanut butter morsels with the peanut butter cups. Press those in so they stick! Allow to set, about one hour. Cut into squares and store in an airtight container. ENJOY.

    1. By “Reese’s peanut butter morsels” do you mean just Reese’s Pieces or do the morsels not have the “shell” on the outside? I don’t think I’ve seen them here (in Canada) but I haven’t looked at the Bulk Barn yet… they may have something like that. Reese’s ANYTHING and Fluffernutter ANYTHING are my favorites also.

    2. Awwww… I want to try these so badly but I live in Australia! No Reece’s here! 🙁 SAD!! I have never even seen anything similar I could substitute the Peanut Butter Cups! Oh well, I guess I’ll have to admire from a-far or attempt to eat my screen…. Awesome post tho! THANKS!

      1. I buy them at my grocery store in the baking aisle. You may be able to find an off brand of them instead??

    3. Oh WOW- those look to die for. Peanutbutter, marshmallows, rice krispies, Reeses- all of my favorite things!

    4. Flutternutters are so amazing…and you put them in a krispy treat, amazing! I love everything about this recipe!

    5. Fluffernutters are my favorite! Is there really any better flavor combination? And the fact that you topped these with mini Reese’s makes this the ultimate RKT. I’m usually not a fan of plain ol’ RKT because they are just ok. But when you add peanut butter, more marshmallows, peanut butter chips, and Reese’s into the mix, then I’m dying the eat the entire pan!

    6. Why oh why don’t we live next door to each other? This 3 hour gap is killing me!! I am so overwhelmed right now too, and I think some of these delicious and incredible krispies would be just what I need to get over that. We need to plan our next get together…you bring these and I’ll come eat them!!!

    7. You just reminded me it’s been a while since we had rice krispies too… Need to fix that asap! 🙂 These look fabulous, Aimee!

    8. Done and done.. these need to happen to my face, Aimee! I love fluffernutters.. and rice krispies are completely irresistible in my book. Yours couldn’t look more perfect!
