Why this Recipe Works

When Chick-fil-a discontinued their coleslaw, they did an amazing next step. They shared the recipe!

So I made it, and loved it, and it tastes just like the original (well, I guess it IS the original). And thought I would share it with you in case you love coleslaw as much as I do!

  • Fresh ingredients!

Ingredient Notes

Ingredients needed for chick-fil-a coleslaw recipe.

Cabbage- for an easy shortcut, I buy the already shredded cabbage mix for coleslaw. If you’re making your own, you can use green cabbage or a combination of red and green cabbage.

Mayonnaise- this is what gives this coleslaw it’s creaminess.

Vinegar- Chick-fil-a uses white vinegar, but you could also swap it out for apple cider vinegar. The vinegar adds the zesty tangy flavor to the dressing.

Sugar- just a touch of sweetness for the best coleslaw recipe!

Dry Mustard- adds a little flavor and spice to the recipe.

Coleslaw Dressing

Making coleslaw is so easy.

Step 1: Whisk together the mayonnaise, vinegar, sugar, dry mustard, and salt in a mixing bowl until smooth and creamy!

Step 2: Add in shredded coleslaw mix and fold over until completely coated.

PRO TIP: The Chick fil A coleslaw recipe calls for two bags of shredded cabbage and 1/4 cup shredded carrots. I bought shredded coleslaw mix instead! Huge saver.

Step 3: Cover and refrigerate 2 hours, or overnight. Serve and enjoy!

The flavor of this coleslaw is perfect. Not too sweet, not too vinegary…it’s JUST RIGHT. Try it. You’ll see.

Tips and Tricks

  • Make in advance. If you’re shredding your own cabbage and carrots, you can do this a day in advance. You can make the dressing several days in advance and store it in the refrigerator separately from the cabbage.
  • Refrigerate Coleslaw before serving. By combining the slaw with the dressing for two hours in the refrigerator, it allows the cabbage to soften slightly to make it the perfect texture!
  • Hawaiian Slaw. Try our delicious Kalua pork with homemade hawaiian slaw. SO GOOD.
  • To make coleslaw healthier, swap out the half mayonnaise for plain Greek yogurt.
  • Chop it small. Love the small pieces of cabbage in your slaw? Make it your own by chopping all the cabbage and carrots into small pieces. This will make it more similar to KFC Coleslaw.

Serving Suggestions

Creamy coleslaw is perfect on a pulled pork sandwich! It’s also a great side dish for burgers, pork chops, and bbq chicken.

Swap out the lettuce on your sandwiches for a spoonful of homemade coleslaw. It’s a delicious addition, and a classic side.

Add some mix-ins. Sliced almonds, cranberries, and poppyseeds are great additions to coleslaw to give it a unique flavor!

Comments & Reviews

  1. My burger and fries meal is never complete without a good helping to coleslaw, I tried this recipe out and it just magnified the deliciousness of my meal by a 100.

  2. I’m not a big mayo fan, so 1/2c mayo,  1/2 c sour cream, 1T of lemon juice, 1/8 c sugar, 4 tsp white wine vinegar, 1/8 tsp dry mustard, fresh cracked pepper and chopped red onion.  Into the fridge for a least 45 mins.  Turned out delicious!!

  3. That chick fil a cole slaw is stunning. Will have to try this for my family. Thanks so much!

  4. Use Mayo either a touch of sour cream or milk – regular yellow mustard n apple cider vingar not white – salt – pepper touch of garlic granular – little sugar to balance the tart ñ sweet or make it tart no sugar. fresh grated carrot ñ fresh cut cabbage is better than the bag in my many many years of cooking ñ making coleslaw. Cover ñ chill.

  5. I love coleslaw!! It’c crunchy, tasty, & just the perfect side for so many dishes! Chick fil A’s is delicious, so I am glad I can make it at home!

  6. Definitely your chick fil a cole slaw is awesomeness! This is a great recipe Aimee, as you know I made it a short while ago and it was lovely, in fact have made it again since. Thanks for sharing!

  7. Good basic coleslaw, nice balance of mayo and vinegar, but I think the hyperbole is excessive. It’s just regular coleslaw.

  8. I followed this recipe as written (which I usually don’t do). I only had enough mayo to make a half recipe so thought I’d give it a go.  OMGosh!!  It was so tasty that I actually ran up to the store to buy more mayo to make another batch…I cannot say it is just like CFA coleslaw since I have never had any of their coleslaw but I can say it is the best coleslaw I’ve ever had…..thanks for sharing….

  9. I halved the recipe and used one 16 oz. bag and the dressing didn’t covered it enough so I had to make the other half of the dressing. Is good but I still prefer KFC.

  10. Hello, I live in Iceland and we dont have bags of coleslaw or bags of cabbage so could you tell me ca how many cups the cabbage is? 🙂

  11. Hi Aimee, Thanks so much for posting this recipe. My mom loved Chick-Fil-A’s cole slaw, she stopped by one day to get her some and they told her it had been discontinued and she got very upset. She asked them why and they said it didn’t sell that well. We live in Virginia. I know Arby’s stopped selling the “Loaded Baked Potatoes ” too, very sad, but that’s not a big problem though can I make my own at home. But thanks again for posting this I will be making it for my mom. 🙂
