Why this Recipe Works

When Chick-fil-a discontinued their coleslaw, they did an amazing next step. They shared the recipe!

So I made it, and loved it, and it tastes just like the original (well, I guess it IS the original). And thought I would share it with you in case you love coleslaw as much as I do!

Ingredient Notes

Ingredients needed for chick-fil-a coleslaw recipe.
  • Cabbage- for an easy shortcut, I buy the already shredded cabbage mix for coleslaw. If you’re making your own, you can use green cabbage or a combination of red and green cabbage.
  • Mayonnaise- this is what gives this coleslaw it’s creaminess.
  • Vinegar- Chick-fil-a uses white vinegar, but you could also swap it out for apple cider vinegar. The vinegar adds the zesty tangy flavor to the dressing.
  • Sugar- just a touch of sweetness for the best coleslaw recipe!
  • Dry Mustard- adds a little flavor and spice to the recipe.

How to Make Coleslaw

Dressing for coleslaw in a clear glass bowl with a whisk.

Making coleslaw is so easy.

Step 1: Whisk together the mayonnaise, vinegar, sugar, dry mustard, and salt in a mixing bowl until smooth and creamy!

Step 2: Add in shredded coleslaw mix and fold over until completely coated.

PRO TIP: The Chick fil A coleslaw recipe calls for two bags of shredded cabbage and 1/4 cup shredded carrots. I bought shredded coleslaw mix instead! Huge time saver.

Step 3: Cover and refrigerate 2 hours, or overnight. Serve and enjoy!

The flavor of this coleslaw is perfect. Not too sweet, not too vinegary…it’s JUST RIGHT. Try it. You’ll see.

Serving Suggestions

Creamy coleslaw is perfect on a pulled pork sandwich! It’s also a great side dish for Instant Pot Hamburgers, Baked pork chops, and bbq chicken.

Swap out the lettuce on your sandwiches for a spoonful of homemade coleslaw. It’s a delicious addition, and a classic side.

Add some mix-ins. Sliced almonds, cranberries, and poppyseeds are great additions to coleslaw to give it a unique flavor!

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the mayo, vinegar, sugar, dry mustard, and salt until smooth.
  • Add in shredded cole slaw mix and fold over with spatula until completely coated. Cover and refrigerate 2 hours, or overnight.
  • Serve and enjoy!

Notes

  • Make in advance. If you're shredding your own cabbage and carrots, you can do this a day in advance. You can make the dressing several days in advance and store it in the refrigerator separately from the cabbage.
  • Refrigerate Coleslaw before serving. By combining the slaw with the dressing for two hours in the refrigerator, it allows the cabbage to soften slightly to make it the perfect texture!
  • Hawaiian Slaw. Try our delicious Kalua pork with homemade hawaiian slaw. SO GOOD.
  • To make coleslaw healthier, swap out the half mayonnaise for plain Greek yogurt.
  • Chop it small. Love the small pieces of cabbage in your slaw? Make it your own by chopping all the cabbage and carrots into small pieces. This will make it more similar to KFC Coleslaw.See blog post for more recipe tips and tricks.

Comments & Reviews

  1. How far ahead can you make the dressing? Would it last 2 or 3 days refrigerated without putting it in the cabbage mixture?
    Thanks,
    Joni

  2. I have never measured anything when I make coleslaw. Taste is the key as it is always mayo, sugar and vinegar (apple cider is best) The key that sets mine apart and people love is some mustard seed which gives any coleslaw some zip ! It gets a little heat with time. To me most coleslaw is too bland without the seeds. I hope you try some I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

  3. I’M DIABETIC, CAN I USE AN ARTIFICIAL SWEETENER SUCH AS EQUAL AND HOW MUCH SHOULD I USE.

    1. I am trying this with 3 Splenda packets. Pretty good on first taste. Will re-evaluate after it sits for a few hours. Might need one more packet. I’d say just start out with 2-3 and go by taste. 😊Have a blessed day!

  4. 5 stars
The day Chick-Fil-A took their coleslaw off the menu was one of the worst days of my life, lol! Thank you for this-it’s identical!

  5. Delicious! So glad I found this recipe, it is Identical to my grandmas. I lost it when I moved four years ago.

    1. Because I don’t care for the taste of mayo, I used 1/2 cup Greek yogurt & 1/2 cup mayo. I also used apple cider vinegar. It was amazing!!! Will add this to the salad rotation for my household. Thanks for sharing.

  6. I used Miracle Whip and it was delicious. I have no idea what Chik a Fil Coleslaw tastes like so it worked for us. Really simple too 🙂

    1. This is my family recipe. Kinda sweet southern coleslaw. I add a fourth teaspoon of mustard seed and celery seen to a large bowl of slaw. You will love this southern favorite.

      1. I agree, NO Maricle Whip! (But I’m no a fan of MW 🤭) this looks delish! Will need to make it for sure. Thank you for sharing.

      1. I shredded my own small head of cabbage and 2 carrots instead of using bagged simply because I needed to use it up. Followed the “sauce” ingredients exactly! It was the most delicious slaw recipe I’ve ever tasted (I’ve never eaten at a Chick-fil-A!) Yum! It’ll be my go to recipe for slaw from now on! 👍👍

    1. I hate mayo and I see someone else said they subbed and it was delicious so I say go for it. I use it in all my other salads anyway

  7. I’d like to make this, but using only one bag of cabbage mix. Do I cut the dressing ingredients i half?

    1. Yes, just cut everything into half. Make to let set in refrigerator for a couple hours. Overnight for best results. It will become creamer the longer it sets.

  8. To cut down on the sodium (for my hubby), I left the salt out completely and we didn’t miss it at all. Also used a light mayo for the same reason. He loves this dressing!

  9. Just made this for a funeral.  Super simple and slimply the tastiest!  I will make this forever.  Never had chick fillets, love this recipe!  Tyty

  10. My burger and fries meal is never complete without a good helping to coleslaw, I tried this recipe out and it just magnified the deliciousness of my meal by a 100.
