I wasn’t even going to share this on the blog. It’s not really even a recipe. However, my blog is a journal of our food over the years…so in that regard my kids love to look back and see the photos of some of their favorite foods.
This Ugly Sweater Cake is one of those things that just came together so easily. It’s literally a box of yellow cake mix, some canned holiday frosting, and a bunch of candy decorations!
However, when it’s put all together it’s the perfect storm for your next holiday party.
Growing up my mom was the queen of Ugly Sweaters. She wore them before they even became trendy! She would purposefully (or at least I hope so) find the ugliest holiday sweater each year and wear it on Christmas Day! Many times it jingled or lit up…and if it didn’t you can be sure she had some earrings or a necklace that did!
Now, ugly sweaters are a whole theme party. Everybody goes to one and wears ugly sweaters. Kohl’s even has a kiosk of “Ugly Sweaters.”
So I think it’s only fitting that if you go to an ugly sweater holiday party…you should bring this fun cake! I found all the candy decorations (love the retro look of them) at my grocery store in the holiday section…however you can also find them on Amazon! There are so many fun things you can do to decorate this cake…but my video shows you just how simple I made mine!
If you check out Lise’s blog, Mom Loves Baking, she has an adorable version using Nestle Candy!!

Ugly Sweater Cake
Yield: 13x9 cake
- Line a 13x9 baking dish with parchment paper. Prepare cake according to package directions, and remove from oven to cool completely.
- Once cake is cooled, remove from baking dish, and using a flat spatula, slide cake out of parchment paper and onto a serving plate (or cutting board).
- Spread frosting smooth onto cake top and sides.
- Pipe on icing to resemble sweater. I used circle candy sprinkles as buttons and added some fun decorations. ENJOY!
