Why this Recipe Works

When Chick-fil-a discontinued their coleslaw, they did an amazing next step. They shared the recipe!

So I made it, and loved it, and it tastes just like the original (well, I guess it IS the original). And thought I would share it with you in case you love coleslaw as much as I do!

  • Fresh ingredients!
  • Tangy and flavorful.

Ingredient Notes

Ingredients needed for chick-fil-a coleslaw recipe.
  • Cabbage- for an easy shortcut, I buy the already shredded cabbage mix for coleslaw. If you’re making your own, you can use green cabbage or a combination of red and green cabbage.
  • Mayonnaise- this is what gives this coleslaw it’s creaminess.
  • Vinegar- Chick-fil-a uses white vinegar, but you could also swap it out for apple cider vinegar. The vinegar adds the zesty tangy flavor to the dressing.
  • Sugar- just a touch of sweetness for the best coleslaw recipe!
  • Dry Mustard- adds a little flavor and spice to the recipe.

How to Make Coleslaw

Dressing for coleslaw in a clear glass bowl with a whisk.

Making coleslaw is so easy.

Step 1: Whisk together the mayonnaise, vinegar, sugar, dry mustard, and salt in a mixing bowl until smooth and creamy!

Step 2: Add in shredded coleslaw mix and fold over until completely coated.

PRO TIP: The Chick fil A coleslaw recipe calls for two bags of shredded cabbage and 1/4 cup shredded carrots. I bought shredded coleslaw mix instead! Huge time saver.

Step 3: Cover and refrigerate 2 hours, or overnight. Serve and enjoy!

The flavor of this coleslaw is perfect. Not too sweet, not too vinegary…it’s JUST RIGHT. Try it. You’ll see.

Serving Suggestions

Creamy coleslaw is perfect on a pulled pork sandwich! It’s also a great side dish for Instant Pot Hamburgers, Baked pork chops, and bbq chicken.

Swap out the lettuce on your sandwiches for a spoonful of homemade coleslaw. It’s a delicious addition, and a classic side.

Add some mix-ins. Sliced almonds, cranberries, and poppyseeds are great additions to coleslaw to give it a unique flavor!

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the mayo, vinegar, sugar, dry mustard, and salt until smooth.
  • Add in shredded cole slaw mix and fold over with spatula until completely coated. Cover and refrigerate 2 hours, or overnight.
  • Serve and enjoy!

Notes

  • Make in advance. If you're shredding your own cabbage and carrots, you can do this a day in advance. You can make the dressing several days in advance and store it in the refrigerator separately from the cabbage.
  • Refrigerate Coleslaw before serving. By combining the slaw with the dressing for two hours in the refrigerator, it allows the cabbage to soften slightly to make it the perfect texture!
  • Hawaiian Slaw. Try our delicious Kalua pork with homemade hawaiian slaw. SO GOOD.
  • To make coleslaw healthier, swap out the half mayonnaise for plain Greek yogurt.
  • Chop it small. Love the small pieces of cabbage in your slaw? Make it your own by chopping all the cabbage and carrots into small pieces. This will make it more similar to KFC Coleslaw.See blog post for more recipe tips and tricks.

Comments & Reviews

  1. Excellent recipe! I don’t make coleslaw very often. This recipe is a game changer!! I used the coleslaw to top my pork chop sandwiches. My husband loved it and he’s pretty picky with coleslaw. Thank you very much!!

    1. Thank you. Was your comment necessary? How about scrolling on and finding a recipe you like instead of being rude.

      1. 1. THANK YOU for calling out this guys rudeness. 2. Clearly the guy just doesn’t like coleslaw.. I mean, so many receipts have the same amount of mayo (which I’m assuming is what he means is “gross”. 3. Amazing receipt!!!! That’s coming from southern coleslaw lovers that are SO sad that Chick-Fil-A did away with theirs! 🙂

      2. I made this slaw for tonight’s fish fry and it was a huge hit! As far as that rude dude, he’s just an arrogant idiot and obviously doesn’t have any manners whatsoever!

      1. I followed this recipe added some grated onion it comes out as juice and a little celery salt and I must say THANK YOU ITS DELICIOUS!!!!

  2. this is the best coleslaw! i have been making this since i first found it. i swap the sugar for stevia and it’s just as good.

  3. Best recipe ever! Anytime my son wants it, or if the meal just needs it as a side, My Go To, recipe!!
Works well with anything, at anytime. Thank You 🙂

  4. Very good! I did 1/2 Recipe and only used 2 tsp of Sugar which was plenty for our taste. I also added lots of cracked Black Pepper and Celery Seed

  5. Definitely tasty, but I used half the sugar as 1/4 cup seemed a lot for 1 cup of mayo. Absolutely sweet enough – could even cut it further!

  6. When shredding my own cabbage how much do I need for this recipe? I have never made my own. So gonna give it a try. I figure 4 carrots to 1 cabbage head I hope this is correct.

  7. Tip: Save back an empty mayo jar, put all dressing ingredients in empty jar (or to remaining mayo in jar) and shake to mix.

I also like to use half mayo, half sour cream or you could use plain Greek yogurt..

    1. Fantastic Tip- I’ve been doing it for years too. For the last several years I have been physically disabled and in a wheelchair but I am now gaining my “spunk” back through rehabilitation services and am going back into the kitchen to cook! I made a bologna sandwich spread and put the empty mayo jar back in the frig. My husband thought I was nuts and proceeded to tell me so. I told him about “saving” the empty jars to use as a dressing shaker as I am making coleslaw today. Smart wife, huh, and it doesn’t leave another dish for me to wash and the dressing is thoroughly mixed too!

  8. Dear Mam:Should the shredded cabbage be boiled into hot water before mixing with other ingredients and before keeping frozen to make it not to crunchy to chew?

  9. Very good! Made for company who really enjoyed. Im the tough sell but it was great! Will try with Swerve (or something similar) and maybe 1/2 Greek Yogurt and see how they are.

  10. What? No sour cream in this recipe?should be the same amount as the mayo. I also add 1.5 tsp of sweet relish(for every 1/4) of the amount of cabbage.
    It came out super delicious!.

  11. I love Chic Fil a coleslaw so I am making it for my nieces wedding reception. **** I need some help calculating this recipe to feed 150 people. *****I know some recipe sites will let you adjust the servings and the recipe will be altered accordingly but I did not see that option on this site.

    Any help would be appreciated!!!!!!!
