Frenchs Green Bean Casserole Recipe

Regarding holidays, we all have our favorite side dishes.

Growing up, French’s Green Bean Casserole is not the dish I chose. When you see mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, or Jiffy corn casserole, people often skip the green beans.

As an adult, I always make sure to scoop some Green Bean casserole onto my plate. It has creamy mushroom soup and crispy fried onions.

If you’re like me, and avoided this classic recipe for years, give it another go this holiday!

Green Bean Casserole Ingredients

Green Beans

  • I choose canned green beans for this classic green bean casserole. Whether you opt for regular green beans or the french style cut beans is your preference.
  • You can use frozen or fresh green beans, but be sure to cook green beans to tender first before adding to the casserole.

Milk: The heavier the milk the creamier the casserole. This casserole will also be delicious with 2% milk!

Mushroom Soup: Having tried numerous brands and “off” brands of canned mushroom soup, I am now pretty picky and only choose Campbell’s.

I love the thickness and flavor, as well as the color (yes, if you’ve ever bought other brands they don’t look the same). You can make homemade cream of mushroom soup with my quick recipe below, but given the option, I will always choose Campbell’s.

Frenchs Crispy Fried Onions are a standout in this dish, often referred to as French’s Green Bean Casserole.

You can tell it’s true when you see people serving themselves from the casserole dish. They always try to get as much of the topping as they can!

Making the best green bean casserole recipe is easy. Combine the soup with milk and add the soy sauce with pepper. Add green beans.

Fold in some French’s fried onions and put it in the casserole dish.

Wondering how long to cook green bean casserole? It takes about 30 minutes, adding 5-10 minutes when topping with more crispy fried onions.

Aimee’s Best Tips

Add a sprinkle of parmesan cheese with salt and pepper to the top for a tasty twist! My family even likes to toss in some cheddar cheese before baking.

Comments & Reviews

  1. This is pretty much the green bean casserole recipe on the back of the durkee French fried onion ring crisps that you add to green bean casserole and been around for 40 years. Your recipe is a copy cat of that and not original it seems.

  2. While we did enjoy it, it seems a little heavy on the black pepper. We like black pepper, but I think next time I’ll use about half as much. Otherwise delicious.

    1. I was just thinking the same thing. I’m going to make it tonight but then add the topping just before serving tomorrow. Hope it works out. Lol

  3. Wondering if I can used asparagus and cream of asparagus soup oppose to green beans and cream of mushroom soup.
I’m thinking since the asparagus are very slender, I would just have to French cut them and not precook them.
    What do you think?

  4. Sorry, this is the grossest, unheathiest dish I can think of! Why not just sauté some onions, and put on top of some cooked fresh beans? Not hard and a heck of a lot better.

    1. Because some recipes are enjoyed for generations, and this Green Bean Casserole is something our family has eaten for years and years and we love it. Feel free to saute fresh green beans, but please no need to come here and judge others.

  5. If making the cream of mushroom grin scratch, Do you still need the whole milk??

Others asked, but I didn’t see an answer. Please let us know! Thank you!!

  6. For the mushroom soup can I make it ahead of time and store it. If so would I store it in the freezer or refrigerator so that I can use the next day

  7. Sorry, to clarify-I don’t have a circular baking dish like the one shown above…is there an alternative baking dish you would recommend?

  8. I’ve always considered the Soy Sauce the “magic” ingredient. If you could taste-test the same recipe, one without soy sauce, and one with, you would be amazed at the difference.

  9. You can’t beat the classic recipes but what I really love is how you gave the option to make homemade cream of mushroom soup! Perfect!

  10. Dear Amiee
    Love all your recipies
wanted to ask if you have ever use
Campbells golden mushroom for this recipe
    I love the difference
    Thks so much
